Here is an example.... I KNOW many of "US" consider Common , Lupe, and Jay Z among others as great emcees...that is what some of us consider "OUR TYPE" of hip hop. However, if there were never any artists out like Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris... I believe alot of "US" would take "OUR TYPE" of hip hop for granted. I feel many of us would not appreciate it as much as we do now. So maybe Soulja Boy is a blessing in disguise for those of "US" who prefer the Mos Def's, Talib's and Andre 3000's of the world. Also vice versa for the fans of Soulja Boy....without all the "conscious" rap or "backpack" rap...would you appreciate "YOUR" type of hip hop as much?
Please understand that all hip hop artists are creating hip hop music....whether its good or bad is something YOU as an individual decide for YOURSELF...
This is a Good Question...think about it... and send some opinions....
Good Morning and God Bless

For me there's really no need to hypothesize. My hip hop coming of age came in the late 80s/early 90s. Back then there was no distinction between "mainstream" and "underground." Hip hop was hip hop, period. However, it was also understood that skills are what gained you respect. So MC Hammer and 2 Live Crew had their fans and that was cool; those of us who preferred a different type simply let them be.
All that said, there were definitely crews that I slept on back then, precisely because I did take them for granted. I didn't appreciate EPMD or 3rd Bass. In retrospect, they were dope groups but I didn't appreciate them then because they didn't "seem" all that special.

For some, this may be true...but I really dont need wackness to make me really appriciate the music I like...I appreciate that there is all kind of hip hop...and even though I dont like all the music is put out...It is what it is...
I consider stuff like Jurrassic 5, Tribe Called Quest, etc. to be 'Good' hip hop.
Most of the stuff you hear on the radio on the other hand, is 'Bad' hip hop.
I prefer an intelligent MC that makes me think, and an innovative DJ any day.

good question.. but it's too early to think that hard.. don't you know I'm still hung over from last nights VICTORY (NY!!!!)
but to try and answer your question, although I would still love and embrace the "type of hip-hop" I listen to... it's the same as with anything else.. you never truly appreciate quality to the fullest until you experience the "other stuff" that falls short or vice-versa (like people whose first exposure to hip-hop is soulja boy or the likes of him, they write hip-hop off as crap... but then when they hear a Common album, or something of the likes, a light shines on them and they realize how much REAL hip-hop has to offer).
It's kind of like shoes.. you can find cheap shoes that look nice, but kill your feet... then when you put on GOOD shoes, you realize what you were missing out on.. and after that... it's hard to go back...
Yes I do appreciate the type of hip hop I love w/or w/out influence from the type I hate. Cause then you can flip the script and say for example...there is no Soulija Boy or Hurricane Chris's out there. You can change the genre of music then...wouldn't need some lame or untalented hip poppers out there to make me appreciate what I enjoy listening to. I never take for granted what I have passion for.
You are right thought they are trying to "expand" the hip hop style....but see its hard to see them as trend setters when they are bopping around on t.v w/white sunglasses on and flippin' their wrist trying to dance when it looks like they are having a fit!
this is a good one, everyone needs a Nemesis to exist, the hip hop that we all love would only be so so if , the soulija boy's of the world didn't exist, music as always been a big focus in our society as a whole. it's just like back in the 70's when disco came on the scene, people that were into soul , hated disco , but soul music wouldn't make it without it's Nemesis, but it's still to each their own opinion.
Good question. For me, yes I would still appreciate the hip hop I love. Public Enemy's Nation of Millions was the reason I fell in love with hip hop, and before that I hadn't really had much experience of it, so I had nothing to compare it to.
I think maybe it's different for the younger heads who have had to turn to the underground, but I was lucky enough to grow up in an era where the mainstream was playing GOOD hip hop.
Yea there always has to be a balance...Theres ying and yang for everything because nothing is perfect...lol I agree with what ur saying but Id rather the wack sh1t be in the background and less heard then in the forefront and misrepresenting hip hop music...WORD UP
