you said it your self purists people that actually know the elements and have the understanding of hip-hop know that RAP is just one of the elements that have grown because of hip-hop n without a doubt its the most popular element that represents hip-hop, its practically hip-hops spokes person.

GREAT point Dj'in is actually the father of hip-hop. The DJ brought the community together and from their pple started dancing (b-boy/girls) and later on in hip-hops early stage the MC was created.
RAP has many sub-genres that not everyone is exposed to.I'm sure you can feel and even hear the difference between Dr.Dre and Nelly both great artist but totally different styles.

Hip-Hop has crossed many boundaries and land scape is just one BUT wat u know as hip-hop might not be wat others do...many pple over seas are hardcore hip-hop loving pple but its different cant really explain this can only compare it to wat u call football we call score.
