Watch these two hip hop throw back videos...tell me your opinions?

I was spending some time on youtube and I was watching some of my favorite hip hop music videos. I found two in particular that in retrospect, predicted a lot of the problems that hip hop is facing today.

Watch these two videos and tell me what you think their similarities are. Who do you believe they are referring to in these songs? Is it anyone in particular? Although I am not a huge fan of some southern rap, I hear people saying that south killed hip hop, I don't believe that's true, especially after watching these videos.

Both of these hip hop groups are hip hop genuses. They saw what was coming a long time ago.

For those of you not familiar with real hip hop, please take the time to watch these videos and listen to what they are saying to understand more. For those of you who think rap is all about guns, sex, drugs, and exploitation, you must LISTEN.

Thanks

You always bring me back to back in the days! I love it!...lol. I was just bumping The Roots today.

When those tracks came out it was already beginning about all the sex, and money, not as bad it is now, but it was there. They called artist out on it. I remember Nas was one of them too. I remember in one interview he said he was embaressed of following the commercial, rapping about money and women. It took him a while to see it.

De La Soul, and The Roots are 2 legendary groups, who have all marched to the beat of their own drum. They did not care of what sold more, all they did was make music that was real to them. They were both unique in their own ways. It is not surprising that they saw where hip hop was going.

i love the first part of the verse from The Roots"

" Yo, lost generation, fast pace nation

World population confront their frustration

The principles of true hip-hop have been forsaken

It's all contractual, and about money making

Pretend-to-be cats don't seem to know their limitations

Exact replication and false representation

You wanna be a man, then stand your own"

So true!!!!

I was feeling that roots and de la soul.it took me back in the day when music was really good and not this crap you hear today
It's ironic you post What They Do. It's been my replay song for the month of August. I have listened to that song everyday this month! It's amazing how music videos are still like that and that video was made way back in 1996. I guess we aren't progressing. The De La Soul video was dope too.

If you want a return to the late 80s and early 90's you gotta listen to Little Brother. In my opinion they are the De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest of the new millenium. They are called Little Brother because they are the Little Brothers of pioneering hip-hop MC's and groups (De La, ATCQ, KRS, etc.). One line I like from them is, "Stakes is high, so I eat at Taco Bell now". How many groups or MC's would give a shoutout to pioneering groups like that?

Listen to LB!
The Roots! De La!! Oh, my heart is happy.

These two groups, and others, did see that the cookie cutter was on overdrive when it came to "vision" of hip-hop. Same ol', same old, rented out the same damn mansion, same damn video shots, same everything. The message got drowned out and the money look became brighter.

Bad Boy and SoSo Def did a lot of slick videos back then. I think they are talking about them. I think Tupac first slick one was I Get Around and then it took off from there.
it is amazing how true this is now more than back then. i dont believe that hip hop can die, but it shows what happens to something that is original and beautiful and esoteric in nature, when it is exposed to a mass market and exploited for money and mass appeal.

Critics say that hip hop is nothing but violent and misogynist lyrics, but they have only become that way when trying to appeal to them. When it was just among us, it was on another level. It shows us who the ones are that value violence and disrespect towards women. cuz its not the hip-hoppers.
Posdnuos is one of top ten favorite MCs.
